Chapter 8
By the time Dawson and Goliath arrived the following morning, any intensity that may have existed between us the previous evening seemed to have evaporated. Dawson had stopped at Gildaâs Café and picked up full meals, so there was plenty of food to consume, which appeared to have minimized the need for idle chit-chat. When Dawson spoke, he brought up a discussion heâd had with Beck regarding Buck Bensonâs death, which became the subject of our conversation.
âBeck called me this morning and asked if Meatball could hang out with Goliath and me this afternoon since he wanted to take Lou hiking, and given the steep terrain of the trail he wanted to tackle, he was worried that Meatball wouldnât be able to keep up.â Meatball was an English Bulldog with short legs and a round body. âI, of course, told him that Goliath and I would be happy to entertain the little guy and even mentioned that Iâd thought of asking you if you wanted to go with me to take Goliath for a leisurely walk on the beach. I indicated that if you were amenable to that idea, weâd pick Meatball up at Beckâs apartment on the way to the beach. This got us talking about the odd tides that people have observed in the area recently, which led to a discussion about Buckâs death.â
âAnd what did Beck think about Buckâs death?â I asked, deciding I wanted to hear more about Dawsonâs conversation with Beck before responding to Dawsonâs idea of a walk on the beach.
âHe said that in a case such as this, where the evidence could point to either a murder or an accident, the tiebreaker often came down to whether or not there appeared to be a viable suspect with both motive and opportunity. In the case of Buckâs death, Beck wasnât sure there was a viable suspect, but he also pointed out some inconsistencies with the details as presented at this point.â
âWhat sort of inconsistencies?â I asked.
Dawson took a sip of his coffee and then answered. âFor one, so far, Colt has been unsuccessful in locating a single witness who claims to have spoken to Buck after he was dropped off at the marina on the night he died. But based on the timeline weâve managed to put together, it seems that he arrived at a time when lots of people were in the area, and it seems likely that heâd have stopped and chatted with someone.â
When I didnât respond right away, Dawson continued.
âAccording to what Alex told us, Buckâs body wasnât found until around eleven-thirty when a man named Jerry Goodwin took his dog out for a walk. According to the staff at the Bistro, my own recollection, and the story provided to the police by Gibson, the men left the Bistro somewhere between ten and ten-thirty. If Gibson took Buck directly to the marina and his body wasnât found until eleven-thirty, it seems likely that either Buck met up with someone for
