Chapter 8

By the time Dawson and Goliath arrived the following morning, any intensity that may have existed between us the previous evening seemed to have evaporated. Dawson had stopped at Gilda’s Café and picked up full meals, so there was plenty of food to consume, which appeared to have minimized the need for idle chit-chat. When Dawson spoke, he brought up a discussion he’d had with Beck regarding Buck Benson’s death, which became the subject of our conversation.

“Beck called me this morning and asked if Meatball could hang out with Goliath and me this afternoon since he wanted to take Lou hiking, and given the steep terrain of the trail he wanted to tackle, he was worried that Meatball wouldn’t be able to keep up.” Meatball was an English Bulldog with short legs and a round body. “I, of course, told him that Goliath and I would be happy to entertain the little guy and even mentioned that I’d thought of asking you if you wanted to go with me to take Goliath for a leisurely walk on the beach. I indicated that if you were amenable to that idea, we’d pick Meatball up at Beck’s apartment on the way to the beach. This got us talking about the odd tides that people have observed in the area recently, which led to a discussion about Buck’s death.”

“And what did Beck think about Buck’s death?” I asked, deciding I wanted to hear more about Dawson’s conversation with Beck before responding to Dawson’s idea of a walk on the beach.

“He said that in a case such as this, where the evidence could point to either a murder or an accident, the tiebreaker often came down to whether or not there appeared to be a viable suspect with both motive and opportunity. In the case of Buck’s death, Beck wasn’t sure there was a viable suspect, but he also pointed out some inconsistencies with the details as presented at this point.”

“What sort of inconsistencies?” I asked.

Dawson took a sip of his coffee and then answered. “For one, so far, Colt has been unsuccessful in locating a single witness who claims to have spoken to Buck after he was dropped off at the marina on the night he died. But based on the timeline we’ve managed to put together, it seems that he arrived at a time when lots of people were in the area, and it seems likely that he’d have stopped and chatted with someone.”

When I didn’t respond right away, Dawson continued.

“According to what Alex told us, Buck’s body wasn’t found until around eleven-thirty when a man named Jerry Goodwin took his dog out for a walk. According to the staff at the Bistro, my own recollection, and the story provided to the police by Gibson, the men left the Bistro somewhere between ten and ten-thirty. If Gibson took Buck directly to the marina and his body wasn’t found until eleven-thirty, it seems likely that either Buck met up with someone for
